Lesson 1: Strategy vs. Tactics --- Know the Difference
Let me clear something up right now because I see this confusion ALL the
time. Strategy and tactics are not the same thing, and if you confuse
them, you will spin your wheels endlessly. Strategy is your destination
and your overall plan for getting there. Tactics are the specific moves
you make week by week, day by day, to execute on that strategy.
When I was rebuilding after bankruptcy, my STRATEGY was clear: become
one of the top keynote speakers and business coaches in the country.
That was the destination. But the TACTICS looked like cold calling
potential clients from a coffee shop. Showing up for free at events to
build my reputation. Sending hundreds of emails. Recording video after
video. Writing endlessly.
The strategy never changed. The tactics evolved constantly.
"My destination never moved. My route changed a hundred times. That's
the difference between strategy and tactics --- your WHY stays constant,
your HOW has to be flexible." --- Marques Ogden
Michael Porter's work in Competitive Strategy is the gold standard for
understanding this distinction at the business level. Porter
distinguishes between strategic positioning --- where you choose to play
and how you choose to win --- and operational effectiveness, which is
the tactics you use to execute on that positioning. The best
organizations, and the best leaders, are crystal clear on both.
Key Takeaway: Strategy is your destination; tactics are your route. Hold
the strategy sacred. Keep the tactics flexible and data-driven.
Reflection Questions:
1\. What is your current strategic objective --- your clear destination?
Can you state it in one sentence?
2\. List three current tactics you're using. Are they actually aligned
with your strategy, or have you drifted?
3\. What is one tactic you've been holding onto that isn't working ---
and what might you replace it with?
